5 reasons I would fly #Lufthansa Business Class again and not #United Business
I was recently booked on a long haul flight with two layovers in Lufthansa Business Class. However, due to change in flight schedules, I had to fly one of the flight segments with United Business (or United First or United Premier Access as they call it) and the experience was not all that nice. Here is why I prefer Lufthansa Business to United Business:
1. The Aircraft:
While Lufthansa flew the brand new double-deck A380 (the world's largest aircraft) with the entire upper deck reserved for Business and First Class passengers, the United aircraft was the much smaller and older Boeing 777-200 with only just a small cabin for Business Class located just before the economy class.
2. Seat Configuration:
Even though United flew a much smaller plane, the Business Class had a configuration of 2, 4 and 2 making it to a total of 8 seats in one row-a very claustrophobic configuration for Business! The seats were way too narrow and even though I am a slim person, I could hardly move in my seat and felt almost caged in; am wondering how uncomfortable it would have been for the bigger and taller men and women! In contrast, the Lufthansa aircraft was much bigger and had a total of six seats in a row-two in the center and two each by the windows (a configuration of 2, 2 and 2) so that the seats were big and comfortable and allowed each passenger to have their own private space.
3. The comfort of the seats:
Even though the United seats turned into a flat bed, they were so narrow for any body movement that while lying down it felt like somebody had literally pinned me down in one position! I also felt very uncomfortable about having other passengers sleep so close to me! The seats themselves were very soft without any firmness and ended up giving me a backache. :( The Lufthansa Business seats on the other hand were a class apart-I could actually control the firmness of the seat from the monitor on my armrest! The seats converted into a comfortable and reasonably wide flatbed-I could lie down flat or curl myself up in any position or have pillows flanked on my side while sleeping in the plane! In the sitting position too the United seats gave me a terrible lower back-ache as they didn't have any lower back support-I tried to adjust a pillow on the lower back but without any success:(. In Lufthansa, it was awesome to be able to control from the armrest how much lower back support I wanted-the seat would bulge or arc out at just the right position with the monitor controls.
4. Storage space:
The United Business seats had absolutely no storage space whereas Lufthansa had an entire compartment for storage on the side of the seats with a load limit of 22 pounds or 10 kgs. Here I stored my camera, wallet and other expensive belongings without worry of loosing them and quietly sank into the comfort of the Business Class enjoying a nice movie on the in-flight entertainment with a wide high-definition screen and Bose headphones :).
4. Cleanliness of the plane:
The Lufthansa aircraft was brand-new and boasted 5 star standards with a very good ambience and energy-it was heaven flying the Business in the A380! The carpet-slippers were great to move around in, kept the floor clean and the feet felt comfortable and relaxed! On the other hand, the United Business was of a much lower standard and the plane was really old.
Again, the Lufthansa Business Class service was totally awesome and the food was amazing while in United the meals seemed to be cheaply prepared and missed that special touch. On the domestic United Business connection, there was no choice of meals and the lunch menu was fixed to Thai chicken curry. My co-passenger who was allergic to curries could not eat the lunch despite the fact that she was traveling first class! Even the coffee served in United was like tasteless brown water nothing compared to the delicious German Dallmyr coffee served in Lufthansa.
In short, I would rather fly Premium Economy or even Economy in Lufthansa A380 than United Business!
