How changing this one habit can change my destiny!
I was recently talking to a friend from my meditation group we have been attending for over 15 years now. She was feeling defeated about not being able to conquer some of her bad habits that have remained with her over the years and was having doubts about her own worthiness for the spiritual path. This reminded me of another similar discussion I had with another friend long time ago on the power of habit in controlling our actions. Even though we may think that we have been victorious in conquering some of our unlovely traits, our joy may only be temporary when we find out that the old patterns of thinking and behaving keep recurring.
Everyday there are hundreds of blogs being written on success and achieving your goals, and even though they might temporarily inspire us to get out of bed in the morning and start living our dreams, somewhere during the day we loose focus of our goals and sink right back into our old habits of doing things. Consequently, we do not succeed in accomplishing very much which is also the cause of our unhappiness. However, if we commit ourselves to daily deep introspection and a continued process of impartial self-analysis, we may be able to ascertain the exact reason why we haven’t progressed as we have wanted to.
For me the breakthrough came last year when I was house sitting for a friend who lived in a sparsely populated, small town about 200 miles away from me. To begin with, I was a complete stranger to this town which was going to be my home for the next 14 days. I had no friends or acquaintances and the first neighbor lived atleast a couple of miles away. The only noises I heard from the road were those of the occasional trash collectors’, raking the trash bins for glass bottles. Then one day as I was thinking how alone I was, I was as if seized by the reality of my own self. All delusions dropped away and I saw the complete picture of my life. I saw that even though I thought I was growing, I had just been going round and round in circles. In an instant I knew that in order to change my life, I needed to start changing my thoughts—that thoughts were everything and that by changing a single thought I could in fact change my destiny. It all had to begin with creating the habit of right thinking.
It all ends and begins with the habit of right thinking. Maybe you want to write a book, start a new business or succeed on the spiritual path, start creating a mind space for yourself that will help you achieve your goals. I always like the idea of faking it till making it. Tell the mind that you have already achieved the success you are working for, and the mind will start attracting conditions accordingly. More than anything else, you will see that just by changing your thoughts, you are becoming a happier person filled with the confidence of realizing your dreams. It requires perseverance, an indomitable will and a willingness to change. Through repeated affirmations and continued effort, infuse in the core of your being these two precious words, I can, and you will see a whole new world opening up for you. It cannot be otherwise for in it lies the power of positive thinking.
To end, I want to share with you this famous quote that explains the habit of thinking positively so beautifully.
