On Vitamin D, Dr. David Williams and glucosamine: how I got my knees back!
"When you think that you cannot go on, a little light comes from somewhere to help you..."
So I woke up one morning and realized I couldn't walk anymore. The swelling in the knees was so bad that it confined me to bed for several days and after a scan, the doctor said that it was probably a ligament tear and in order to be certain of what it was, he suggested to actually drill a hole in my leg—I literally went into a state of shock!—was he out of his mind?!—it was my leg he was talking about! I quickly consulted another doctor who on examining my reports, said that it was not a ligament tear at all but cartilage decay that had set in at a very early age. The earlier doctor had infact lied to me about my reports so he could make some extra bucks--just the thought of what would have happened to my legs if I would have gone ahead with his treatment, makes me shudder. :(( No, I didn't sue him—I have faith in the workings of the Universe and believe in Newton's law that every action has an equal and opposite reaction, so leaving the doctor to his own fate, I moved on.
Getting back to my story—it was the summer of 2010—the knee problem caused me to cancel a color course I was about to attend in Sweden and various other engagements—so not knowing which way to turn I decided to take the Glucosamine prescribed by this new doctor, and even though the initial recovery was very fast and it brought me back on my feet again, I couldn't run anymore or sit cross-legged or do all the usual things that required an effort of the knees. After trying out various different kinds of Glucosamine on and off, for about 2 years, I gave up on it because after the initial period of recovery, I did not honestly see any signs of progress. I did come back to it last year, but a friend told me that this particular one had too many chemicals in it and he was certain that it was doing me more harm than good. I stopped taking it too and started looking for a more natural source which I eventually did find and which I will talk about a little later. :)
Besides my knees, I started to tire very easily, so much so that even half an hour of normal physical activity would completely exhaust me! Mornings would find me without any energy or will power to do anything and I would have to literally drag myself to the kitchen even to make a cup of coffee—it almost felt like walking under water!
Then one day, a dear friend passed away. I remember meeting him just before Christmas of 2013 and we sat and chatted long hours and made plans for the next year. Just after a few days he had a heart-attack and in two months, after his triple bypass surgery, he passed away. It was a terrible shock and broke my heart:(. Almost at the same time, another friend fell sick with an Auto Immune Disease owing to deficiencies of vital vitamins and minerals in the body because of bad-eating habits. Then I met a lady in a train whose husband had been suffering from dementia and was admitted in a clinic where he had been staying for 10 years or more, without any memory before he passed away last year. The dementia had been caused due to the deficiency of Vitamin B12 and when they found out, it was already too late--no amount of B12 could save him.
Here is the B12 from Garden of Life mykind organics that I found totally organic and awesome too--made from fruits and veggies, it comes in the form of a nice-tasting spray which can be better absorbed by the body. Available on amazon.com for $11 plus tax, it has great reviews and I would highly recommend using this one especially when you feel low on energy. It's good to add to your list of daily supplements and you might want to combine with the Vitamin C spray to protect yourself from cold and flu especially during the flu season.
My situation was such that despite the knee problem, I hadn't really got a proper health-check/nutrition-test ever done in my life!--even the doctors whom I had consulted about my knees, never recommended one! I began loosing faith in the doctors and started my own research about all the essential vitamins and minerals needed by the body. This is when I accidentally discovered grassrootshealth.net, a website dedicated to the importance of Vitamin D in the body. I went through one of their seminars on youtube where a lady talked about her own experience and how the deficiency of Vitamin D had caused her to suffer from breast cancer and osteoporosis. I discovered that when the body is Vitamin D deficient, it cannot absorb Calcium which in turn weakens the bones and greatly increases the risk of fracture. Also Vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins that supports the immune system, deficiency of which can cause the immune system to shut down!. Intake of Vitamin D also reduces inflammation which had been the main problem with my knees.
My own test results showed that I was super deficient on this most essential Vitamin and probably had been throughout my teens and most part of my life which I believe caused my knees to give up at such a young age. Can you believe that something as simple as that can cause such a problem and the doctors did not even once suggest me to have this very vital test done! My serum levels when I started taking the D3 supplements, were as low as 5 and by taking 10,000 I.U. per day rose to 79 in almost three months; after which I have been taking the minimum 2,000 I.U required by the body per day and an additional 5,000 I.U. two or three times a week. I also get my serum levels checked every 3 or 4 months to ensure right serum levels in the body.
Apart from Vitamin D, this summer I discovered Dr. David Williams from Texas which was probably the best thing that ever happened to me in my life! I had gone to Pacific Palisades in Southern California for a holiday where I met a friend who talked about the supplements he had been taking from Dr. Williams which had really helped him over the years and highly recommended him to me. What he told me about the doctor was really fascinating, that he had spent time with the aboriginal tribes in Australia learning their health secrets which he included in his supplements. Besides, the doctor believed in natural healing which was exactly what I was looking for in a supplement. After researching online on drdavidwilliams.com, I ordered the Joint Advantage Gold glucosamine from him which has ingredients like bovine cartilage and eggshell membrane!
I have been taking the Joint Advantage Gold regularly for the last few months along with the Vitamin D3 (which I have been taking for about two years now) and for the first time in 6 years I am able to start sitting cross-legged again! The pain in the knees is much less and my exhilaration and happiness about getting my knees back knows no bounds! It's a new life for me...literally....to be able to sit like this...again!!....I have joined yoga classes now and am able to practice many asanas that involve knee-movement. Thank you Dr. Williams!
That's me sitting in yoga-posture!! And this one is for you style lovers out there--the tracks are Ralph Lauren and the sweat is Vero Moda.......and it's Black Friday on 27th Nov--time to stock up on your supplements and your wardrobe! Yes, and let's be grateful this Thanksgiving for good health and the joy of living. :)
