Far from the Madding Crowd
I saw this movie on the in-flight entertainment in my Lufthansa flight to the U.S.A. this summer and I saw it only three times!:) Ok, I notice that this film blog is turning out deathly romantic so please bear with me as I post another review on yet one more romantic movie! This one is truly the best I have seen in a long, long time!
Based on Thomas Hardy's classic novel 'Far from the madding crowd', it's the story of a young, independent and headstrong woman Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan) who has three very different men contending for her love-Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), the very loyal, faithful and handsome sheep farmer; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a Sergeant in the army and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen) a very wealthy and mature bachelor.
It's the story of love and human relationships and how spiritual qualities like faithfulness, loyalty, perseverance and true unconditional love eventually win in the end. The kind of love Gabriel Oak has for Bathsheba is more Divine than human for he gives, gives and gives without asking anything in return. Oh well, wonder if this kind of love merely exists in movies and dreams-and maybe it spoils your head a little bit too!-but the enduring character of Gabriel Oak and his sensitive good looks, the fabulous direction by Thomas Vinterberg and the wonderful performance of difference actors, make this movie a timeless classic truly worth watching!
