Getting over the habit of buying new stuff all the time!

Mind is a tricky thing–one has to keep playing games with it. Ofcourse it's very nice to have #newclothes to wear all the time–what in the world can beat the #innerglowingfeeling one feels on holding a box that has just arrived from Ralph Lauren! However, having just gone through a shopping excess and not having enough space even to store the clothes that I already have, I am being forced to make difficult choices in life–to choose between moderation and indulgence. Well, those who have been there know it is not that simple when the mind has gotten so used to this really comforting habit of buying new stuff all the time. Somebody once said to me to be very careful with what I do once because I will be forced to do the same thing again and again against my own will–this is the power of habit.

Here is something I tried and it is working–whenever the thought of wanting to buy something new arises in the mind, I don't contradict it; I simply tell the mind that I will buy it and the mind is instantly comforted and satisfied and the struggle ceases. Each time the desire to shop comes back, I tell the mind that I will buy whatever is it the mind wants, but actually keep postponing till suddenly I find that the desire is no longer there. I am currently postponing the desire to buy this elegant dress from the Eileen Fisher Sale–the only way I can justify this purchase is to make it a reward for something....can't come up with anything at the moment...!
